Heart Shaped Crayons

This weekend we took on a few Valentine’s Day crafts – we got Little V’s valentine box ready and we made some Valentine’s gifts for her classmates. It’s a fun little craft that utilizes all those broken crayons you have lying around. You can do any theme using whatever tin you have available. Since these were for Valentine’s Day, I used a heart shape.

First, break up the crayons. I had a lot of jumbo sized crayons which I squished in between two old cutting boards. I skipped the browns and blacks and also supplemented with boxes of crayons because I had over 20 to make – you could use whatever you had lying around. The smaller the crayon the faster they melt. These were the largest I used, and after my first batch I broke them even more.

Fill your tins about half full and melt them in a preheated 200 degree oven. Checking every five minutes or so.

When they are all good and melted (they’ll look like this), take them out of the oven and let them cool. You can cool them in the fridge if you are in a hurry – but I found it only takes about 20 minutes if you leave them on the counter.

Ta-dah. A lovely finished product.

My big hint – if you can – use a silicone “tin”. It will stretch and make it easier to remove the crayons. Have fun!

I did this with stars a while back. Levi loves them, but he won't actually color with them. Go figure. He just likes to play with them and stack them up.
